Since thinking about starting my own little agency again, I've noticed a few things since I last ran one: There's a huge gap at the smaller (more nimble, less expensive) end of the market. Many tiny agencies and studios moved in house.
-
As with after 2008, I wonder if the current, and deepening, recession is an opportunity for smaller, more nimble studios and agencies. More specialist. More creative.
-
Because, there is precedent for this before 2008, too. In 2001, after the crash, smaller web agencies flourished. Blogging was born. After a forest fire, new shoots grow.
-
of course, I also wonder if this is something – as with after 2008 – clients will actively go searching for. As the job market gets swamped with designers with very little out-of-house experience, what will happen?

Many freelancers are not working with multiple clients, but servicing (contracting) longer term clients. Supporting the rise of design capability in house.
