      1. I'm coming around to the idea that, from a digital archiving, document retention, point of view, PDFs might be the way to go. Of course, when compared to HTML, there are a lot of negatives about PDF.

      But... PDF format is stable, cross platform, portable. HTML should be, but it mostly isn't, and increasingly so. This isn't HTML's fault, of course, but the source of content and the javascript and all this other [waving hands in the air] stuff!

    Talking to several archivists at institutions in the past and they favour PDF for this reason. It has the solidity of print. A moment in time. A format that can just be locked away. Time will tell if that format – like most others – dies, and with it, all of those documents.

      The other thing against HTML is that it is rarely on its own. For any web based product to make sense from an archiving perspective, it all has to be bundled together: js, images, etc. PDF wraps it all up in a single, portable document.
