If there's a single piece of typography advice I'd give it would be to typeset like you hear speech. Pauses, inflections, emphasis, quiet, loud, rich, gestures, dialects, diversity. Monotone typography is as soulless as a monotone voice.

That said, sometimes you need to typeset with as little expression as possible. For the type to play an entirely supportive role it must almost completely disappear. There, but not. To enhance, but not intrude. A crystal goblet.
