Trying to ignore my dog whilst he prowls around looking very alarmed with all the fireworks going off. He's thinking: 'Are you not seeing these? Hey! HEY! Are you not hearing what I'm hearing!?'

But, on advice from our dog behaviourist, to comfort dogs when they are stressed is approving and reinforcing their behaviour. Instead of us saying 'It's ok, don't worry'. What we're really saying is 'Carry on, your behaviour is appropriate'.

Dogs ignore other dogs – not comfort them – when they are stressed. For the mental well-being of our own dogs, we should do the same, as hard as that is. Human and dog emotions are different.

Oh. For anyone who isn't in the UK, it's our national annual 'Celebrate the Hanging, Drawing, And Quartering of a Terrorist Hundreds of Years Ago' day. When I was a child, not only did we set off fireworks, but set fire to an effigy of said terrorist on a bonfire.
