Based on recent experience, good digital typography is increasingly the domain expertise of front-end engineering, not product design.

And, I have nothing against front-end engineering at all. It is *great* that typography is not the exclusive remit of 'design'. However, given good typography relies on an equal balance of art and engineering, it concerns me.

The remedy to this is a more schmushing of 'product design'. Front-end engineering: get good at typesetting. Learn the craft. Designers: roll your sleeves up and start giving a shit about opentype, variable fonts, rendering and browser support. Get out of Figma and into a browser
