      1. Hiring designers without a design task has been done successfully for decades. You just need to make time to: 1. Review portfolios. It's about due diligence. Behind every piece of work is a story. 2. Talk to the designer. Don't leave it to a third party. 3. Slow down. Hire once.

      You can assess problem solving, stakeholder management, presenting work, knowledge of best practice, methods and tools all with a good, fruitful discussion just like any other role. The craft should be evident in the work. If it's not, you have a problem a task won't fix.

    A common problem with portfolios, of course, is people presenting work that was done as part of a team (which is almost always the case). Your job as hiring a designer is to understand the context of the work starting with the question: 'what was your role in this work?'
