      @ScottKellum My concern with business managers managing design teams is two fold: 1. The democratisation of quality. Most design teams are not empowered to do this. 2. Managing down, and empowering, could be fine. It’s the managing up and sideways that concerns me.

    @ScottKellum And, I think on that first point, when a business manager is defining design strategy (along with Product and Engineering), and they aren’t a designer, you can end up with a big design disconnect. I can’t help thinking that much of the visual coalescence we see is because of this

      @ScottKellum In my view, bold design strategy requires opinionated design leadership (with a capital D), not just people management. Yes, you have to bring people along – and all that comes with it – but many principal designers are not placed in this strategic position.
