This misappropriation of the term has been around for at least a decade now, and I really wonder where it came from. ‘Art directed’ layouts became a term for non-templated layouts. Or ‘layouts that have had human intervention’.

I mean, who are we kidding. For digital products: algorithms, meta data, user data, design systems, and brand ‘levers’ are the art directors. Art direction in the traditional sense just can’t happen on anything with any scale. We’re designing art direction machines.
