  1. Aside from the performance benefits, I do wonder if variable fonts provide value to those who just have no experience of really detailed type setting. After chatting with lots of designers there seems to be such a gap.

      Take, for example, optical weight. *Super* useful as a variable axis for really detailed typesetting. Would many product designers know how to really typeset with this? How about front-end engineering?

        And, beyond the instances defined by the type designer, who has the chops/confidence to deviate from them? Not sure I do. Just feels like we’re a way off really understanding and implementing the benefits that variable fonts give us. I should probably just write a blog post.
