Watch this TED talk with Jojo Mayer about musical improvisation. youtube.com/watch?v=Npq-bhz1ll0 Then, designers, think about design systems during the first few minutes.
-
But, watch this talk. It’s ace. Reframed how I think of improv and how it can be applied to my work. And he does it all without dropping a note. Amazing musician.
-
He defines improvisation as ‘Achieving a state of mind to recognise and exploit opportunities in the spur of the moment… without the security of pre-set protocols.’ ‘Most people improvise when things don’t go to plan and are perceived as of lesser value’. Rings bells.

Some of the most rewarding design I’ve been part of is when pre-set protocols are loose. When there is space and trust in product teams to improvise – how he defines it – gives rise to big jumps in innovation.
