        1. I've worked with a lot of product folk over the years – from managers on teams, to strategic partners. My take on what product folk (should) do better than anyone else. Just one thing: focus. That's it. If nothing else, then that.

        And it is a really hard, often thankless job. Taking information from everywhere – often contradictory, competing, imperfect, and ill-informed. Weigh it all up. Decide on a direction. Communicate the purpose. And provide focus.

      That's why when I work with good product people – who naturally do all of this – they are worth their weight in gold. Do what you can to keep them motivated, empowered, well-compensated, and well-rested. They will pay you back 10x.

    I say 'well-rested' because I'm sure we've all seen those bright flames in companies burn themselves out, sometimes in a matter of months. For product folks especially, the context switching and comms overhead is tiring.
