Hypothesis: design principles are not things you can dream up locked in a room for an hour. Well, I mean, you can. But they won't be true or useful.
-
Why? Because they are a belief and a promise. Design teams should change those beliefs and promises in response to a business and the design team itself. The more you learn, the more the team works together, the more the biz changes. These all affect principles.
-
How have I facilitated good principles in the past? 1. By holding off creating them for a bit. Let the team bed in. Let the problems become clearer. 2. Don't have a workshop. Just be mindful for repeated beliefs and phrases. These will emerge. 3. Expect them to change.

Point 2 there is inspired by Ed Catmull and his no 1 management tip: be observant. The more you can be attuned and aware of these things – by being present – the more you are able to capture them as they float by.
