Design system folk, I have a question: how do you track how your design system (positively) impacts speed of delivery for the teams it serves?

I wrote a weeknote. After 2.5 years. markboulton.co.uk/journal/weeknote-37/

So, impressions of not being on here for a good six months and then coming back for a couple of days: • My timeline is ~50% ads and people I don't follow • Still the click-bait • I do miss some folks who aren't on Mastodon • Content is more varied here than Mastodon

Coming back on here for a look around during the Tory annual conference was probably a very bad idea.
-
I'll try that again without typos. So, I'm back here again. What have I missed?

Knock knock. Hello? So… can I do this 599 times more now and that’s it?
-
anyone have a Bluesky invite I could have? Before this place finally explodes.

Posting here again to keep the old profile alive. Might need it one day. In the meantime, I’m over on that other place. It’s nice over there. Nobody is yelling.

A quick tweet to say nothing so my account doesn’t be suspended for inactivity.

Let’s see if this sticks this time. I’m over on the ‘don. mastodon.social/@markboulton

I learnt something yesterday that blew my mind a little. Different types of fish are not related species. Just like some things that live on land are not related. A cod is not related to a tuna. Nor a weever fish to a batfish. Ah, it's the simple pleasures.

Twitter has been a part of my professional life for so long. Yes, my engagement has waned, but I’ve met so many friends here. Feeling pretty sad for what we’ve lost.

I am very sad about what is happening to Twitter. So much of my professional life has been inside these walls. But, that has been at the expense of my own walls (these are, after all, someone else's). Back to my blog, it is then.

I need a recommendation on a note-taking app. Apple notes is ok, but I struggle with organisation and it lacks any kind of integration possibilities. It'd be nice to integrate notes with Google calendar (not Docs - again, organisation problems). Any good contenders out there?

At my parents house for a couple of days and it's so quiet my Airpod's are generating noise to then cancel out. It's like they want to be busy.

If you have even the slightest hint of misophonia, don’t get a dog. If he smacks his lips one more time I’m trading him in for a cat.
-
Finally deleted Instagram. For the odd image from my friends and family - and the odd picture of my dog - it really isn’t worth it in amongst the aggressive algorithm and endless nonsense reels (which will only get worse as they try and monetise them).

Does killing a cold with whiskey work? Asking for a friend.

Well, that’s my first cycling time trial season over. Ended it with a PB of 23:52 in the Cardiff 100 open in Abergavenny this afternoon. Now a little rest before settling into winter training. Got my eye on a 22 next year.

'Bloody designers' is the new 'Bloody cyclists'.

Like Money Trees, dear @10DowningStreet, you can't grow pies.

As much as the lurch to the extremist right of politics is painful right now, I'm really, really hopeful that Labour/Green/Lib Dem can get it together and occupy that centre ground and capitalise on the recent months. If not now, then when?

Beware website redesign projects. Experience tells me that they almost always: 1. Become a CMS procurement project 2. Get coupled with some kind of event/product launch 3. Lead to a content mountain that needs climbing 4. 'Need' a design system

Turn the TV on to see five minutes of the Eng vs Ger match. Immediately turn it off with a quiet ‘pfft’ and a slow shake of the head.

Entered my first open 10 mile TT. Slightly bricking it. Two weeks hard work ahead. Last race of the season before a full TT season next year.

Conference speaking tip. Don't 'design' your slides. Make them clear, understandable, and to amplify your words. BUT... don't make them all fancy. Fancy slides are yet another thing that raise a perceived bar. This excludes people from thinking they could give also give a talk.

I'm quite looking forward to using Sketch again.

Don't worry, Designers. It will be fine.

Is it April?

Dynamic. Island. An Island. A dynamic one at that. To be on a fly on the wall when that one was suggested. Rejected suggestions. Moving Hole? Responsive Void. Pit of Power.
-
I haven’t written a blog post in over a year. Need to fix that.

2022 General Election? Or ‘23?

Close shave this morning on my bike. Bloke opened his car door on me. I swerved just in time but it smacked my arm. Very sore now. He didn’t apologise. In fact, he was yelling at me. When are motorists going to understand that cyclists are vulnerable on the road.

Radical candor is just situation normal for Mancunians everywhere.

Having a user researcher in design sprints from day one - even if there are no insights to share at that early stage - is a game changer. They ask the best questions and it really helps guide focussed insights gathering.
